The Academy of Fine Arts "Pietro Vannucci," originally the Academy of Drawing, is one of the oldest Higher Institutes of Artistic Education in Europe.
Its historical importance is underscored by the dates and personalities who have given life to this institution over the centuries. Its origins are in fact very far back in time. It was founded in the spring of 1573, eleven years after the birth of the first Academy in Italy, that of Florence.
At present, the "Pietro Vannucci" Academy is based in the ex-convent of San Francesco al Prato, where it preserves a historical-artistic heritage of inestimable value, within which the library, the gypsotheque, the cabinet of drawings and the gallery of paintings are prominent.
The Academy as an Institution of Higher Artistic Education is placed under the aegis of the Ministry of University and Research of the Italian State and has the power to grant academic diplomas with the value of Bachelor's and Master's degrees.
